Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro is situated in northern Tanzania close to the Kenyan border, it is the highest free-standing mountain in the world, an inactive stratovolcano consisting of three volcanic cones; Mawenzi, Shira and Kibo. The cntral cone is named Kibo and is the highest of the three cones. The flat snow covered top of Kilimanjaro made famous by Ernest Hemingway Kilimanjaro is probably the most accessible high altitude mountain in the world. This is helped by the fact that it does not require any specialist equipment, or technical climbing experience.

If you are considering climbing Mount Kilimanjaro then you should first consider which route you wish to take and how many days you would like to climb for. There are six official routes on Kilimanjaro, with the Lemosho, Rongai and Machame being the most popular. Treks typically last for between 5-8 days, the longer the trek the better chance people have of summiting as this helps with acclimatisation.
